My iQuest Experience

My iQuest experience has been life changing.   The amount of knowledge that I have acquired over the past year has been tremendous.  I have been exposed to the professional side of the health care industry instead of the usual patient view.  From technicians to nurses to physicians, I have been able to see the great variety of jobs that make up the healthy industry.   I have been given the opportunity to see many complex operations and procedures.  I would not change this experience for anything else.
It was very difficult to find a medical internship.  Since I am particularly interested in dermatology, I tried asking my dermatologist if he would allow me to shadow him.  However, since I am a minor, he did not feel comfortable with me interning at his office due to liability issues.  I looked up the available volunteer opportunities at hospitals such as Kaiser and Valley Care, however, these hospitals were looking for high school freshmen for their interns.  I didn’t know what to do.  I had looked everywhere for internships around San Ramon and I was ineligible for all of them.  However, when I had my interview for iQuest, Mrs. Bonagura told me of the opportunity for me to intern at San Ramon Regional Medical Center.  This was such a relief.  I thought that the idea of me interning would be unattainable.  When Mrs. Bonagura told me that I was one of the four lucky students to receive the internship at San Ramon Regional, I was ecstatic.  I couldn’t wait to start my journey in the medical field.
In order to intern at San Ramon Regional Medical Center, I had to attend a mandatory orientation, where I learned of the rules of working at a hospital as well as about disease prevention and control.  I also received the name of my nurse preceptor at this orientation.  My preceptor was a lady named Brea and I can honestly say that she was the best mentor.  She allowed me to shadow her as she worked with patients. She also gave me opportunities to view different surgeries and procedures such as broncoscopies and blood diffusions.  She also connected me to other nurses such as a cardiology nurse named Mike, who took time out of his day to show me all of the different units in the hospital.  He showed me how an MRI works and how to read its images.  He also allowed me to view a left heart catheterization procesure as well as an anterior back surgery.  Together, Mike and Brea showed me almost every career that exists in the health industry which allowed me to see what I am most interested in.
No class as Cal High would have taught me as much about the medical field as this internship had taught me.  I learned how to interact with patients in order to help comfort them during their difficult time.   I also saw the insertions of IVs hundreds of times.  I bet I could do them myself at this point!   I had been given the opportunity to see a PICC line insertion on my first day of interning.  This procedure involves the insertion of a catheter through the peripheral vein so that the patient can receive medications, fluids, and other nutrients for an extended period of time.  I have also seen a bronchoscopy.  During this procedure, a viewing tube is sent down a patients nose and into their lungs in order examine for any lung abnormalities.  In addition to bronchoscopies and PICC line insertions, I have also seen an anterior approach to spinal surgery.  During this surgery, one surgeon created a small incision in the stomach and stretched it out so that he could enter the abdominal area.  This general surgeon also moved the stomach and other organs to the side so that the back surgeon could perform his procedure.  As the surgery went on, I was able to meet and talk with the general anesthesiologist.  She expressed her love for her job and told me her educational journey that got her to where she is today. This surgery was among my favorites to watch since it was cool to see how three different doctors work together to perform one surgery.  Not only have I viewed various surgeries and procedures, I have also seen a platelet transfusion for a cancer patient through the use of a platelet apheresis machine.  This patient received side effects from her chemotherapy, causing her platelet count to decrease significantly. While interning at San Ramon Regional, I have seen a lot of technological devices that I did not know existed.  I was able to see operations that many pre-med students my age and older have not yet seen.  Through this experience, I was able to conclude that a future career in the health industry is the perfect fit for me.
There are things that I wish I could have done better during my time as an intern at San Ramon Regional Medical Center.  I wish I was able to go to the hospital more often.  I would usually go for 1-2 hours a week.  Having high school sports after school limited my ability to stay at the hospital for an extended period of time.  However, I know that this is not under my control and I am glad that I was still able to balance sports, school, and my internship.  I also wish that I kept up with my journal entries.  I wanted to write an entry each day about everything I learned about at the hospital.  However, I was unable to keep up with this goal of mine.   Although I have a couple regrets, I still feel that I learned a lot of valuable things through this internship.  I learned things about myself, such as how I have the ability to view unpleasing procedures and surgeries without feeling sick.  I have also learned that I enjoy being able to constantly interact with patients
I am blessed for receiving this special opportunity to intern at a hospital.  Real life experience is so much more valuable than learning from a textbook.  I want to continue my medical education next year by finding another internship near UCSB, the university that I am attending next year. I am looking forward to my future as a health professional who can provide quality health care to patients in need.

Outlooks and Attitudes

I had the blues because I had no shoes until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet. ~Ancient Persian Saying

This quote is among my favorites.  The quote states that you may think you have it bad, but someone always has it worst.  I think about this every day.  Whenever I have a bad day, I always tell myself that my life could be way worst.  I am so lucky to have been raised in the wonderful city of San Ramon with a family, shelter, love, etc.  There are many people who do not have any of the things that I take for granted such as simple necessities like water and a bed.  This quote picks me up when I am down because it reminds me of how blessed I am.

BLESSED

Essential Question

An essential question is a question that is central or important to an issue or someone's life.  I have an essential question that relates to my future career.  I am asking myself, what are the different specialties in dermatology that a physician assistant can be part of?  I will research my way to the answer so that I can know what type of jobs I will be expected to perform as a physician assistant in the dermatology field.

Figuring out an essential question was not an easy task.  However, my teacher helped me to develop my question.  I was over thinking so much while brainstorming questions about the health field that I could not see that my essential question was in fact just a simple question about my future career will consist of.

I am excited to research about the various specialties that a physician assistant can take part in while working in the dermatology field.  It is very important that I know this answer so that I can decide if I want to part take in this job.  I am looking forward to seeing what my research will lead me to!

Throw Away the Myths and Aquire the Facts

"Dr. Fulton's Step-by-Step Program for Clearing Acne" by Dr. James E. Fulton was possibly one of the most interesting books I have ever read.  This book was all about the skin; my favorite topic!  It started out by burying the myths that manipulate people's view on acne.  This was followed by a deep description of how and why acne forms.  This was my favorite part of the book.  I was fascinated by how the sebum of the skin can clog pores and induce the acne process.  Dr. Fulton described the various forms of zits such as pustules, nodules, and cysts.  Later in the book, Dr. Fulton included a segment about benzyl peroxide, the medicine in which he claims is the best in controlling acne flareups.  He teaches his readers how to apply this medication the correct way since people mistakenly put the medication only on their zits.  Dr. Fulton includes charts and quizzes in order to personalize an acne regimen to the readers individual needs.
This book taught me A LOT about my future profession.  I want to be like Dr. Fulton.  He as been involved in so many research trials regarding acne that he knows how to control the disease.  I learned so much from reading this book that I feel like I could already diagnose and treat this disease to acne sufferers! One interesting fact that I learned is that the peeling that the benzyl peroxide medication causes on the skin means that the medicine is working!  I used to use benzyl peroxide until it began drying and peeling my skin.  I thought that the product was too strong for my skin so I stopped using it.  Now that I know that the peeling is just a necessary stage in order to get rid of the acne and loosen the impactions in my pores, I will go back and use this product again.
I recommend this book to everyone who suffers from this skin disease as well as to anyone else who has dermatology as a future career interest.  I trust that all the information in this book is legit since Dr. Fulton has received high-end education in this subject and has proof from all of his claims since he has been involved in years of research.

FOCUS

When I walked into the building of Robert Half International, I did not know what to expect.  I knew very little about what Junior Achievement was.  All I knew was that I had to create a business plan.  I am not a creative person so I knew that this would be a struggle for me.
When I walked into the room, students from various high schools were seated at tables.  I was given a name tag and group number and I sat down with my assigned group.  I was uncomfortable since I did not know the people in my group.  I felt more comfortable when my friend Kylee joined my group. I am a shy person so being with a friend when I am surrounded by strangers really helps me.
After hearing a few speakers, we were given our group assignment.  We had to create a business plan for an innovation that would help correct a social issue.  The JA officials told us that we would have to create a powerpoint and present our invention to a group.  This made my stomach fill up with butterflies since I did not feel comfortable with presenting to large audiences.
After receiving our assignment, my two partners and I walked into our assigned conference room so that our brainstorming could begin. I hoped and prayed that my partners were creative since I had no ideas for an invention that could help society.  After two hours of deliberation about possible inventions, my partners and I decided upon a product called FOCUS. FOCUS, friendly operating cellular utility sensor, would use a sensor which would be placed underneath the seat of the driver, which would then connect to a mobile application on the drivers phone. With the pairing of the sensor and application, the application would disable the text messaging application so that the driver could not text and drive.  Texting and driving is a huge problem in our country that injures and kills thousands every day.
An entrepreneur walked into our conference room and helped us with our powerpoint and presentation.  He gave us many ideas and tips so that our presentation could be a success.  I enjoyed working with this mentor and my two partners and I also learned a lot about the business industry.
My group was the first one to present.  I was nervous at first, but as I continued to talk, the butterflies began to disappear. I started feeling more and more confident.  My partners and I did an amazing presentation.  It was so good that our invention made it to the finals.  We had to present our invention to a board of entrepreneurs and other business men, as well as to every student that attended the convention.  I felt as if I was in the television show, "Shark Tank", as they were asking difficult questions regarding our product. We finished our final presentation feeling good about ourselves.  We had answered all of the judges questions with ease as well as presented without any mistakes.  However, our invention wasn't good enough since our product did not make it to the top three.  Although we didn't win, I am very proud of my group and myself for being brave enough to present to the large audience and for coming up with such a great business plan.
I learned a lot at this JA convention.  I learned about what it is like to be an entrepreneur.  I also learned how to think outside of the box. I learned that I am a good public speaker and that I should always be confident in myself while I'm doing presentations.  This was a great experience for me and I would love to be part of this type of event again in the future.

Reflection

I can't believe that I have one more semester of high school left!  My four years of high school flew by in a blink of an eye.  I used to say how I wanted to graduate high school and leave but now I don't want to leave.  I feel that it is time to reflect on my last 3 1/2 years of high school.  I have had many successes in high school, but I also have some weaknesses to improve on in the future.

I will begin with what went right in my high school career. For one, I did very well academically.  I ended up with all As during these past seven semesters with an exception of one B+.  I studied diligently and my hard work shows on my transcripts.  I am also proud that I avoided the drama that high school can bring.  I tried my best to avoid overhearing gossip and I stayed out of people's problems.  This helped me avoid any necessary stress that I do not need in my life.  Furthermore, I am very glad that I had a fun social life in high school.  I learned how to balance school work with friends and extracurricular activities.  I believe that having a balance really helped in my success in the classroom.  I have great memories that I will remember forever.

Although I had a lot of peaks during high school, I also have a few areas of improvement.  One area that I could improve on is being more self-confident. I always cared about what people thought about me.  One goal I have during my last high school semester and beyond is to be confident in myself and to do what I want to do, regardless of what others think.  I will know that I have reached this goal when I stop asking myself if other people would judge me if I do something a certain way.  I want to be 100% confident in myself by graduation.  Achieving this goal will take time and I will need to build up my emotional strength in order to achieve this goal.  In addition, I also have a goal that I will practice yoga four times a week in order to become more at peace with myself.  I can get really hard on myself and I am always busy so practicing yoga will help me to relax and will allow me to reflect more on my life.  At some points during my years in high school, I would become so stressed with either school or softball that it would build up inside me and would make me unhappy and sick.  By practicing yoga, I will able to allow my body and mind to be strong and relaxed.

Not only do I have goals for myself regarding my health, but I also have goals regarding my family and internship.  For my family, I want to be able to converse with them without arguing.  This can be achieved if my family and I agree to listen to each other.  I want this goal to be achieve in two weeks.  Arguing with my family just causes me stress and I cannot deal with this negative energy any more.  Regarding my iQuest project, I have a goal to write down a journal entry every day I go in to volunteer.  The entries will be about everything that happened in the hospital that day.  These entries could be short or long, depending on if the day was eventful or not.  I want to have the journal so that I can look back in the future when I am hopefully a physician assistant, I can see the time when my passion for the health field had begun.

It is the end of January of my senior year, which means that I am finished applying to colleges.  I applied to five UCs and two private schools in California.  I applied to UCLA*, UC Berkeley, USC, UCSD, UC Davis, UCSB, and USD.  I am looking forward to hearing back from these schools in March!

Not only am I looking forward to hearing back from colleges, I am also looking forward to high school events such as senior ball, senior ditch days and pranks, assassins, senior picnic, as well as the last few parties and kick its with my friends.  I plan to spend a lot of second semester with my friends since  I won't be able to see most of them ever again after graduation.  I am also looking forward to my last softball season ever.  I have played softball since I was five and have chosen not to continue my softball career in college in order to focus on my pre-med studies.  I have been appointed captain of the varsity softball team at my high school.  I will enjoy every last second that I have left of this game.

Furthermore, high school is quickly coming to an end.  I want to make this last semester of high school the best one yet! Although I am sad about the thought of me graduating high school, I am also excited to see where my future takes me.
